Inositol, particularly myo-inositol, is a carbocyclic sugar abundant in mammalian tissues, including the brain. It plays a role in cellular signaling and osmoregulation, responding to various hormones, neurotransmitters, and growth factors. Inositol is found in foods like fruits, beans, and grains, and offers health benefits, including support for mental health conditions like anxiety and depression, as well as potential benefits for PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and metabolic health. Often used as a dietary supplement, it contributes to improved insulin function and cellular communication.

  1. Investigating the effect of combined use of selenium and Myo-inositol supplements on thyroid function and autoimmune characteristics in thyroid disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
          • Expert Rev Endocrinol Metab. 2024 May;19(3):269-277.
          • Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis on the effects of selenium and inositol combination on thyroid function and autoimmune characteristics.
          • Summary: Combined supplementation significantly increased T4 levels and decreased TSH levels, though it did not significantly affect T3 and TPOAb titer levels.
  2. Daily phytate intake increases adiponectin levels among patients with diabetes type 2: a randomized crossover trial.
          • Nutr Diabetes. 2023 Feb 28;13(1):2.
          • Design: Randomized crossover trial investigating the impact of daily InsP6 consumption on adiponectin and other inflammatory markers in T2DM patients.
          • Summary: InsP6 supplementation increased adiponectin levels and decreased HbA1c in T2DM patients, with no significant changes in TNF-alpha, IL-6, and IL-1beta levels.
  3. One-year effects of myo-inositol supplementation in postmenopausal women with metabolic syndrome.
          • Climacteric. 2012 Oct;15(5):490-5.
          • Design: One-year randomized study evaluating the effects of myo-inositol (2 g twice daily) on biochemical parameters in postmenopausal women with metabolic syndrome.
          • Summary: Myo-inositol supplementation significantly improved glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR, triglycerides, total and HDL cholesterol levels, with 20% of women no longer having metabolic syndrome after the study period.
