Ca-AKG, or calcium alpha-ketoglutarate, is a compound that combines calcium and alpha-ketoglutarate, an intermediate in the Krebs cycle. It is used as a dietary supplement believed to support cellular energy production, improve metabolic function, and potentially slow aging by influencing mitochondrial function and reducing oxidative stress.
Alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG), a key metabolite in the TCA cycle, has been shown to offer various health benefits. Research in Cell Metabolism (2020) revealed that AKG extended lifespan and reduced inflammation in aging mice (Cell Metab, 2020). Another study in Aging (2019) found that AKG supplementation extended lifespan in Drosophila by inhibiting the mTOR pathway and activating AMPK signaling (Aging, 2019).
In cardiovascular health, AKG improved arterial elasticity and stabilized redox homeostasis in aged mice, as reported in the Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology (2011) (J Physiol Pharmacol, 2011). These findings suggest that AKG may promote longevity, enhance stress resistance, and support cardiovascular health by modulating metabolic pathways and reducing inflammation.
