Here’s a step-by-step guide to growing broccoli sprouts using the jar method:
Materials Needed:
Broccoli seeds (sprouting seeds)
A glass jar (quart-sized works well)
A mesh lid or cheesecloth and a rubber band
Water
Steps:
Prepare the Seeds:
Place 2 tablespoons of broccoli seeds into a glass jar.
Fill the jar halfway with water, then add 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and stir well.
Let the seeds sit in the mixture for 10 minutes to help reduce bacterial growth.
Rinse the seeds thoroughly under cold water a few times.
Soak the Seeds:
Fill the jar with enough water to cover the seeds by a couple of inches.
Let the seeds soak for 8-12 hours or overnight. This rehydrates the seeds and starts the germination process.
Drain and Rinse:
After soaking, drain the water from the jar.
Cover the jar with a mesh lid or cheesecloth secured with a rubber band.
Rinse the seeds with fresh water and drain again.
Sprouting:
Place the jar in a dark, warm place (like a kitchen cabinet) at room temperature.
Rinse and drain the seeds twice a day (morning and evening) to keep them moist and prevent mold.
Light Exposure:
After about 3-5 days, when the sprouts are about 1-2 inches long, move the jar to a spot with indirect sunlight. This will help the sprouts develop their green color and increase their nutritional content.
Harvest:
When the sprouts have reached the desired length (usually around 1-2 inches), and have a green color, they are ready to harvest.
Rinse the sprouts one last time, and drain thoroughly.
Store:
Store the harvested sprouts in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They should stay fresh for about a week.
